The Montessori Approach

A method built around how young children actually learn.

The Montessori Approach

How it works

Four ideas that shape our classroom

The prepared environment

The room itself is the first teacher. Everything is child-sized and within reach. Materials sit on low open shelves in a set order, from simple to complex, and each has one place it belongs. A child can find what they need, use it, and put it back without asking an adult. That order is what makes independence possible for a three-year-old.

The work period

Each morning has a long, uninterrupted stretch of time, about three hours, when children choose and complete their own work. No bells, no rotating stations. Children need that length of time to settle into deep concentration, and concentration is the thing we protect most carefully. Snack is available when a child is hungry, and outside time happens within the same rhythm.

The guide

We call our teachers guides because the word describes the job. A guide observes each child closely, notices when they are ready for something new, gives a short lesson, and then steps back. Most lessons are given to one child at a time. The guide keeps careful records of what each child has been shown and what they have mastered, which is how we know where every child is without a single test.

The materials

Montessori materials are hands-on and self-correcting. Practical life work such as pouring, sweeping, and food preparation builds coordination and focus. Sensorial materials refine the senses. Language and math materials make abstract ideas concrete: a child holds a thousand golden beads before they ever write the number 1,000. Culture work brings in geography, science, art, and music. And every day begins with devotional time, because faith formation is part of the curriculum here, not an add-on.

What a day looks like

Arrival and devotional, then the work period with lessons, snack, and outside time, then lunch together. Half-day children go home at 12:30. Full-day children continue with Curriculum Extensions until 3:00. You can see the full schedule on the Primary page.
